2014 is a big year for MMOs. Why? Because not only are titles coming to PC but now, thanks to the improved technology within them, next-generation consoles such as the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are going to be receiving MMORPGs in the near future. There have always been a few MMOs on consoles but nothing to the extent of titles that are releasing this year.
The MMO world is expanding quite a bit in 2014. There are countless new games coming out, many of which are looking like they could be the cream of the crop. Below we’ve provided a list of the MMORPGs that will be releasing over the next few months.
Wildstar is a fantasy and sci-fi-style MMO that is releasing in early June of 2014. The game is being developed by Carbine Studios and published by NCsoft, the same company behind Guild Wars 2. The game is set in the fictional world of the planet Nexus and is full of new technology and ancient secrets for players to discover.
Wildstar is unique when it comes to player movements. Expanding upon the traditional forward, back, side, and jumping movements players will also be able to perform more interesting maneuvers such as dashing and double-jumping. The game will feature story-driven PvE quests, faction-based PvP, player housing, and more.
H1Z1 is an upcoming zombie survival MMO that will be released on the Playstation 4 and PC platforms sometime this year. This game, like most others in this genre, is based around surviving a zombie apocalypse that has occurred in the United States. Players survive the conditions by constructing shelters, crafting various weapons, and using available in-game resources to stay alive.
Unlike other titles in this line, such as DayZ, H1Z1 will primarily be about defending your character against zombie attacks, not participating in open-world PvP. It sounds like players will be able to attack one another still but the primary objective is to work together to survive the zombie-infested wastelands.
Destiny is a FPS MMO that will be debuting on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, and Playstation 3 platforms exclusively. This is the first major project from the development team known as Bungie, the same people that originally created the Halo game series. It is a sci-fi, open-world title with PvE missions designed for groups of 3, player versus player combat, and more.
The Destiny Beta is set to begin sometime in July and the game will officially launch on September 4th, 2014. Bungie has been a bit odd about describing this game, though, insisting it isn’t a standard MMO. The development team refers to the game as a shared-world shooter. This is mainly because the game won’t allow players to see tons of other players on-screen at once in the open world. Instead players will meet in FPS-style matchmaking lobbies.
EverQuest Next: Landmark
Landmark is the sandbox, build-anything-you-want side to EverQuest Next. This game will allow players to collect resources, develop structures, and blast out full creativity in a large, open world. Players will be able to share their creations with others as well as help other players create their worlds.
Another interesting feature of Landmark is the ability for players to earn real money. Players will be able to design various in-game items and sell them in the Player Studio marketplace to earn actual cash.
Trove is considered an open-world voxel adventure game. Many have dubbed this particular title as nothing more than a Minecraft clone. While the game’s appearance does resemble Minecraft and players are able to create structures, Trove does offer a lot more than that.
In Trove players will craft worlds, complete quests, search for chests, and face-off against various in-game foes. There will also be dungeons that can be completed for rewards. This title is being developed by Trion Worlds, the company behind titles such as Defiance and Rift.
The Repopulation is a sci-fi sandbox game that is currently being funded by crowdsourcing. Currently the game has raised just over $35,000 of its $50,000 goal. This title has gotten quite a bit of media attention including praise and hype from large sources such as IGN, Kotaku, MMORPG.com, Massively, and Rock Paper Shotgun.
Players will be able to do anything they wish in The Repopulation. The game will have traditional PvE content, crafting, PvP, missions, and more. According to the developers players can participate in combat but can also completely bypass it and participate solely in non-combat content.
Black Desert is a Korean sandbox MMO that has been in development for over 4 years. The game, which will supposedly be a free-to-play (F2P) title, will include a host of nifty features such as a parkour system, dynamic weather, and more.
Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms
Little is known about this game just yet but considering it has the Game of Thrones name attached to it, one can only hope that Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms can live up to the greatness of the HBO television show. The main thing that dashes hopes for a great MMO from this is the fact that the game will be released as a browser-based title.
